Maytas Infra director quits in haste
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Hyde ... 055666.cms

HYDERABAD: Maytas Infra’s whole time director, Chander Sheel Bansal, quit on Friday triggering a hasty appointment of B Narasimha Rao as additional
director to retain the board headcount at three. The infrastructure firm could have plunged into a serious crisis with Bansal’s resignation as the firm would have been left with only two board directors.

However, at a board meeting called on a short notice, the firm appointed Rao with immediate effect. As per the Companies Act, 1956, every public company should have a minimum of three directors.

After Bansal’s resignation, the two people left on the board of directors would have been vice chairman B Teja Raju and independent director R P Raju. Rao now replaces Bansal, averting a crisis-like situation that the latter’s resignation would have triggered.

At the hastily convened board meeting on Friday, Bansal’s resignation was accepted. However, in a statement issued to the stock exchange, Teja Raju said that Bansal would continue to perform his duties as president transportation and oil and gas sector. The board also decided on the appointment of B Narasimha Rao as additional director with immediate effect.

The infrastructure firm’s top slot has been depleting since last month and there is no overall incharge ever since Ramalinga Raju’s confession on January 7 with Teja Raju staying away from the workplace for the last 20 days. Independent director R P Raju, is a medical doctor unfamiliar with the functioning of an infrastructure firm.

At Friday’s meeting, the board also accepted resignations that have been trickling in the whole of January. A day after Ramalinga Raju confessed to inflated balancesheets, Maytas Infra saw its first big resignation with R C Sinha, the firm’s chairman and independent director putting in his papers citing “personal reasons’’. The firm’s CEO and whole time director P K Madhav followed suit, resigning from his position on January 19 (with effect from January 14). The board also reviewed recent developments and decided to meet again shortly. It also advised employees to extend “full support and cooperation’’ in providing information to all governmental agencies carrying out inspections.

Bansal, who quit on Friday, is a Delhi College of Engineering product and has previously held positions of group general manager and board member in Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group of Dubai and that of managing director of Alstom’s Transport Sector in India, among others.

Innobuzz Takes Part in Delhi College of Engineering's National Seminar on Information Security

http://www.pr.com/press-release/129191

Innobuzz Knowledge Solutions and Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) jointly conduct a national seminar on Information Security and Ethical Hacking.

Delhi, India, January 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Innobuzz Knowledge Solutions, a premier Information Security Training Company and Delhi College of Engineering, a highly reputed Engineering College in India with a history stretching back over 65 years, have jointly organized a national seminar on Ethical Hacking at DCE's Campus. A few more IT Security companies will be a part of the seminar. The participants will be taught about techniques which a cracker can use and how these students can protect themselves from these cyber criminals and online frauds.

According to Mr. Ankit Oberoi, "Information Security is a very important topic these days. You may have the best IT Security system implemented but if the users are not savvy enough, it will be a complete waste, Hence training about Ethical Hacking is critical. Since most of the Information Systems are digital these days, Hackers can do almost anything ranging from canceling your telephone connections to stealing money from your bank accounts. In fact, hackers can also hack your system and then use it as a proxy to hack more systems, making you a partner in their crime, while you are completely unaware about it."

It will be completely free of Cost. For Registration, Mr. N.S. Raghava, (IT Dept.) can be contacted.

The Training Program will be conducted on 2nd and 3rd Febuary 2009 at DCE's Campus. For complete details, one can also visit www.dce.ac.in/security.pdf

The Lightbearers

THE SOUND of music wafting through the morning air at Vedic Sanskrit Agriculture Senior Secondary School in Kheragarh is symbolic of a potent change the institution has witnessed over the last one year. And the sight of students rehearsing to a peppy Punjabi number for their annual day ceremony scheduled on Tuesday is in sharp contrast to the picture of past conditions painted by school principal Omvir Shokeen.
For till about a year ago, the administration of this 90-year-old governmentaided school could not even manage to get the classroom lights and fans to work properly; leave alone using the music system or computers or even the television set.

Powerless days, however, are now a thing of the past for students here. Vedic Sanskrit Agriculture Senior Secondary School now harnesses solar energy to generate its own power. And it's the first among all the government-aided and government schools in the Capital to do so.

The landmark change was ushered in during the fag end of 2007 when four brothers— Lokesh Goswami, Bhuvnesh Goswami, Tushar Goswami and Yogi Goswami, who are all currently settled in the United States—invested close to Rs 15 lakh to install solar panels on the school's terrace.

Their emotional attachment to this institution is the reason why they chose to present it with a unique gift. Their father Goswami Govardhan Lal Shastri taught Sanskrit here from 1947 to 1968. And two out of the four Goswami brothers (all of whom are alumni of Delhi College of Engineering), Lokesh and Bhuvnesh, studied here for two years from 1947 to 1948.

“We spent our formative years here and our father worked at the school for two decades. This is why we keep coming back," said Bhuvnesh, 72, who is Alumni Distinguished Professor at the Clemson University in South Carolina, US.

It was during a visit to the school in 2006 that Bhuvnesh noticed the gravity of the power problem faced by the institution.

“The school's electricity supply drops to 150 volts against the 220 volts normally required for the lights, fans and electrical appliances to function properly. I noticed the computer classes were not taking place because the fluctuating power made it impossible for them to use them. That's when I decided to address the problem and all my brothers were roped in as well,” he added.

A four kilowatt solar photovoltaic electric power system was installed after Tushar, 53, assessed the school's power needs. "As per assessment, the consumption was about six kilowatt. We decided to install a four kilowatt power system to start with. However, over the last one year, we've seen that this has managed to meet the entire need of the school," said Tushar, who is into solar consulting in Florida.

The power system, which has made the institution selfdependent and will also allow it to generate revenue by feeding the excess electricity back into the power grid, will be formally inaugurated by on the school's annual day on Tuesday by classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman Ashok K Baweja is quick to take offence to the word ‘recession’ these days. It’s not as if the Bangalore-headquartered aerospace major is facing a recession — if anything, it’s doing better business than before. The man who’s piloted this state-owned aircraft manufacturer for three years now, was explaining to a journalist why HAL was putting off its MRO project since the current recession had affected the aviation industry quite badly — the article, when it appeared, however, quoted him as saying ‘HAL is in recession’.

While most sectors in the economy, including the aviation one, are reeling under the slowdown, HAL is doing quite well. Its long-cherished dream of getting a breakthrough in the export market for its Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) was fulfilled when the first batch of five ALHs were handed over to the Ecuadorian Air Force at Aero India 2009.

“We are not a Tier-I or Tier-II supplier, we are the prime contractor to many global aerospace majors including Boeing and Airbus. Had we been a second tier supplier to global aircraft majors, the global recession could have impacted us to a certain extent”, says the person who was instrumental in many of HAL’s path-breaking projects. He has held important positions in the organisation before becoming chairman, including in the intermediate jet trainer project.

A hard taskmaster, according to HAL insiders, Baweja has always stressed the fact that there are enough opportunities in the domestic defence and civil aviation market. This, HAL insiders argue, is what has made the company recession-proof to a great extent. “Recession also throws up challenges as well as opportunities, and we take them all. We will manage our own requirements first. There are a lot of opportunities in this country”, Baweja adds.

HAL’s ALH project has been subject to intense scrutiny from the time the first prototype was flown in August 1992 — its slow progress prompted many to ask whether it would continue. The changing demands of the Indian armed forces, certain design issues and finally the US sanctions on India after the nuclear test in 1998, further delayed the project. However, the successful delivery of the helicopters to Ecuador has helped the navratna company make its presence felt in the Latin American market and position itself better for the export market. The Ecuadorian order was secured by HAL through a bid where global aerospace majors like Elbit, Eurocopter and Kazan had participated.

How important the ALH is for HAL can be seen from the fact that it accounts for around Rs 16,000 crore, or around 32 per cent of HAL’s total order book of about Rs 50,000 crore.

“The ALH export delivery to Ecuador has proved that an aviation company located in a Third-World country is capable of making an international foray, in a tough competitive market, outbidding the ever-aggressive global players. Making an export breakthrough in the South African market is no small achievement for HAL”, says an analyst who tracks the aerospace sector quite closely.

Baweja who, after 36 years of service, will be retiring next month has grown with the company. The son of an Air Force officer, Baweja, is the only chairman of HAL who joined the company as a management trainee and rose to its top job. An engineering graduate from the Delhi College of Engineering, and an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies in Delhi, Baweja joined HAL in 1972, passing up another offer to join Tata Power.

Towards the end of his career with HAL, Baweja says HAL has seen the birth of many leaders in the past. “Each leader is different. It’s not correct to try and shape or thrust your ideas on the coming leadership,” says Baweja on his successors in HAL.

According to N R Mohanty, who was succeeded by Baweja as HAL’s chairman. “HAL has just started taking off. It is a very different company today as compared to what it was three years ago. A lot of this has, of course, been possible due to the efforts made by a dedicated and hardworking person like Baweja. He gave a lot of thrust on design and exports, and the results are bearing fruits now.”

Indian Toners and Developers Founder to Receive Hall of Fame Award at Recharger’s ReIndia Expo

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, February 24, 2009 -- (Business Wire India)

Sushil Jain, chairman and managing director of Indian Toners and Developers Limited (ITDL) will receive a Recharger Magazine Hall of Fame award at ReIndia Expo, March 5 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai.

Recharger’s inaugural Hall of Fame was held last August at Recharger’s World Expo in Las Vegas. Eight industry members, including Jain, were inducted into the Hall of Fame, which recognizes those industry members who have built their businesses into industry powerhouses, which then create a positive image of the industry through leadership and/or example.

“We were pleased to be able to include Sushil Jain in the prestigious group that was inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame,” said Recharger’s Publisher Patricia Ames. “But we also wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to present Sushil with his award in front of the members of the Indian remanufacturing industry. Sushil has led Indian Toners and Developers to a leadership position in the industry. He has proven that global boundaries do not exist to a quality company with dedicated leadership. Sushil Jain and ITDL are true industry leaders, and the honor is ours to be associated with them. Presenting him with this award at ReIndia Expo is a demonstration of how highly regarded this Indian company is within the global market.”

Sushil Jain earned his mechanical engineering degree in 1981 from the Delhi College of Engineering. Starting his career as a manager in Jain Tube Company in 1982, he quickly rose to the position of vice president and soon after, executive director. Having inherited his entrepreneurial skills and business acumen from his industrialist family and being a technocrat with vision and a contemporary outlook, Jain seized the opportunity to manufacture toners in India, then an untapped market. It is said that if the dream is good, it shall come true. Jain’s single-minded pursuit of this dream bore fruit in Indian Toners and Developers Ltd. ITDL emerged on the Indian scene as a pioneer and pace setting-company in this high-tech field. Commencing production of toners in 1992 with a modest capacity of 330 MT per annum, ITDL, under Jain’s stewardship, grew almost eightfold to become now an impressive 2400 MT capacity toner company. ITDL manufactures world-class compatible black toners for photocopiers, laser printers, multifunction printers and various other upcoming digital reprographic machines for the domestic and export markets.

In addition to establishing its leadership in the domestic toner market, ITDL’s international marketing team focused on and successfully spread globally including the opening of representative offices in Singapore and Zhuhai, China, stock and sale facility in United Arab Emirates and a wholly-owned subsidiary of ITDL in the United States.

An interview with debutant novelist Sachinn Garg (DCE 2008)

'A Sunny Shady Life', a book by the debut novelist Sachinn Garg, an MBA student at Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, has been released recently. The book is already in top ten at Oxford Book Store..

FINALLY THE debut novelist Sachinn Garg is here with his Novel, ’A Sunny Shady Life’, which is already in top ten at Oxford Book Store and is generating interests among readers for its different cover page.

How come this idea of writing a book?
It was serendipity! Sixteen months ago, one fine night the idea of writing a book came to my mind. Thirty seconds later, I was on MS-word and there it goes.

Tell us something about your book ’A Sunny Shady Life’.
It inherently deals with two issues- romance and psychology. The protagonist is Sunny, an engineering student at Delhi College of Engineering. He is not very morally erect and comes up with several plans to fund his internship in Paris.

The second half has an absolute shift in narration style and theme of the book. The second half conveys a message and discusses several events which force Sunny to come back as a changed person. And the response has been awesome.

You just said the book deals with psychology; you must be reading a lot on this subject?
Yes, psychology as a science has always fascinated me and I have deep interest in it. But most of my learning has been inspired by introspection rather than prodigious reading. The final product looks a lot different from how it started and I am not complaining.

Being a management student, how did you manage writing a book with the deadlines always chasing you in a B-school?
Handling everything alongside the workload of a B-school, made the experience all the more excitingly challenging. Unpleasant trade-offs are made every day and you have to accept an unprecedented four pointer on your mark sheet. I have been living on inhumane time schedule. They say a good B-school makes you a ’man of steel’.

That is why this is even more satisfying.

Tell us something about the inspiration behind your novel?
I had just returned to India after my stay in Paris. I had been meeting a plethora of people and I was not doing very well in the campus placement in college. All in all I was feeling very stimulated and needed a vent for my thoughts and ’A Sunny Shady Life’ was born.

How about your peers in B-school, were they supportive enough when you are out on your Herculean task?
Definitely! It would not have been possible without their constant moral support. They all have been really helpful.

How tough was it to get published?
The publishing industry in India has a bad name for no reason at all. If you have the content, then you will find recognition. My manuscript was accepted by several publishing houses. Finally, I signed the contract with Srishti Publications for I found them the best in terms of pricing strategy, distribution network and other such factors. For instance, the book is affordably priced at 100 rupees. Any youngster even with liquidity crunch can afford to buy the original copy and read it.

Any favourite authors?

Ayn Rand is an author who always leaves the reader with a thought or the way I describe it: With a hangover. I love her works for its completeness. The best compliment an author can receive is that the book left the reader with a thought. I myself would love to hear that.

Any future plans to continue writing?

At present I have started working on two manuscripts. But am eagerly waiting for response by the readers. They would influence my future works for sure which is a side effect of MBA I think.

Wish you good luck for your successful journey. Would you like to give any advice to people, who are planning to start writing a book?
I personally know at least twenty people who started writing a book but left in between. All I can say is what Nike has already said: Just do it, be it anything.

Sanjay Gupta to join STAR India as COO; Jagdish Kumar to head STAR Jupiter

STAR India has made a key change in its senior order. The media company has roped in Bharti Airtel’s Chief Marketing Officer Sanjay Gupta as the Chief Operating Officer. Gupta would join the company in the next couple of weeks. The COO of the company Jagdish Kumar’s mandate on the other hand would be to head the recently created joint venture between STAR India and the Jupiter Group STAR Jupiter in the south. He would continue reporting to STAR India CEO Uday Shankar.

Gupta would be based in Mumbai. All STAR GM’s would be reporting to him.

Confirming the development, Shankar informed exchange4media, “Sanjay is joining us as the COO, and he has been looking at the media business from the other side of the fence. I believe this cross-pollination of talent is important for the media business, and the business has suffered so far from the lack of it.”

Speaking further on the fact that Gupta comes to STAR from a non-media background, Shankar added, “The fundamentals of business remain the same everywhere. I came to an entertainment business with absolutely no previous experience in this domain. I am a big believer that influx of talent cannot be watertight.”

Kumar’s movement is seen as STAR’s commitment to the South operations. In an internal mail, Shankar stated that Kumar led the Asianet acquisition and was increasingly involved in the development and consolidation of the South business. It is understood that his designation too would realigned to reflect his charge of the South operations.

Sanjay Gupta joins STAR from Bharti Airtel, where he was responsible for driving marketing, sales and distribution for the $6 bn mobile business. Prior to Bharti, he played a key marketing role in Hindustan Unilever in various functions such as Oral care and Home care divisions. He has driven strong brands such as Close-up, Pepsodent, Wheel, Vim and Domex. He is a Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering with a post graduation from IIM Kolkata. Gupta has more than 18 years of experience in key marketing and sales functions.
